The Constructed Environment PhD program offers an interdisciplinary, school-wide doctoral degree bridging the four departments of the School of Architecture: architectural history, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban/environmental planning. This program treats the constructed environment as an overarching field that intersects these four disciplines. Here, the constructed environment denotes human-made surroundings, spanning from structural elements to worldwide networks, with studies encompassing spatial and technical dimensions alongside social, economic, ethical, historical, and aesthetic considerations. Applicants must possess a Master's Degree or comparable qualification. The UVA School of Architecture acknowledges that the factors shaping our built world - including social dynamics, biological processes, and physical geography - form ever-changing, interdependent systems rather than fixed conditions. To address the intricate, fluid nature of constructed environments, our curriculum examines these subjects through technical, material, policy-based, and theoretical frameworks.
