The PhD in Architecture & Design Research program is dedicated to forecasting and influencing the future of the profession. We aim to pioneer novel research pathways, broaden knowledge foundations, address pressing contemporary challenges in architectural fields, and generate fresh perspectives on the discipline's past, present, and future. This program emphasizes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, leveraging the extensive expertise of faculty in the College of Architecture & the Built Environment and throughout Jefferson, a nationally recognized doctoral research university.
As a student in this program, you'll select a specialization area and undertake groundbreaking research on current, field-specific subjects. You'll formulate a research question and engage in cross-disciplinary exploration, utilizing the vast professional knowledge available across the University. The culminating dissertation represents a personalized, independent endeavor where you'll make substantial contributions to knowledge within your chosen specialization.
Select your focus from diverse topics supported by faculty expertise in areas such as eco-conscious architecture, high-efficiency structures, urban planning, intelligent cities, geospatial systems, heritage conservation, socially responsible design, healthcare design, sustainable urban development, property development, and advanced construction methods. Your research will extend beyond core architectural disciplines, fostering collaborations with relevant fields like engineering, business, and health sciences, guided by an academic mentor.

Qualification Requirements

Transcripts: Applicants are required to submit an official transcript for their highest earned degree.
For programs with prerequisite coursework, official transcripts from the institution(s) where the coursework was taken are required.
For programs with advanced standing (Master of Architecture, the Master of Science in Interior Architecture, and the Master of Urban Design), official transcripts from all institutions are required in order to be considered for advanced standing.
Personal Statement: Submit a personal statement that describes your interest in pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture & Design Research and your future research agenda that describes your broad focus area/concentration.
Letters of Recommendation: Submit two letters of reference that provide insight into your academic and/or professional competence. References from college or university faculty members or professional sources are accepted. You may request recommendations through your MyJefferson account.
R'sum: A current professional r'sum is required.
Degree Prerequisite: Applicants are required to hold a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent upon evaluation of international transcripts prior to the start of the program.
GPA Requirement: A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended.
