The program primarily targets those aspiring to pursue careers in academic teaching and research. Participants enjoy considerable flexibility in their coursework, with focus areas generally categorized into: Architectural Theory and History, Building Technology, Landscape Architecture Theory and History, and Urban and Regional Development.
While architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning students complete their degrees through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, they often collaborate closely with faculty at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
This program perfectly suits those aiming for teaching and research positions in architectural history and theory, building technology, landscape architecture, and urban development - spanning ancient times to contemporary practice - or examining the constructed environment through social, economic, technological, and ecological lenses.
Participants can pursue doctoral degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Urban Planning. An Architectural Technology specialization is also offered. This joint-degree program, coordinated by both Harvard's Graduate School of Design and the Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, provides students with the advantages of affiliation with both institutions.
