The department provides an accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch), along with post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. This research-intensive degree equips high-achieving students for academic careers in architecture and related fields, or for specialized research roles in government and private sectors. The curriculum fosters interdisciplinary learning, combining rigorous coursework with original research. Students focus their studies (forming the foundation for their dissertation) in specialized tracks: Building Science, Technology and Sustainability or History, Theory and Society.

Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
