This program equips students for careers in academia, whether in architectural history, design, or related disciplines. Doctoral candidates develop skills to teach architectural history and theory courses while gaining experience in studio instruction and curatorial practice. Alongside the required colloquium, PhD candidates complete a curated selection of courses at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design and other campus departments. These courses are chosen based on individual research goals and in coordination with their principal advisor, emphasizing both broad interdisciplinary exposure and specialized expertise. Students define their academic path by selecting Major and Minor Fields of study, typically completing three courses from another department for the Minor Field and five architecture-focused courses for their Major Field.
