The University of Virginia's Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese recognizes the Monacan Nation as the original stewards of the land and waterways where the university is located. For additional information about the Monacan Nation's heritage and officially recognized Tribes in present-day Virginia, explore the land acknowledgment from UVA's Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights Office. The University has continuously offered Italian language instruction since its establishment. In 1986, the Virginia Council for Higher Education authorized the revival of a Bachelor's program and the creation of a Master's program in Italian studies (currently on hold). Since that time, student participation in introductory Italian classes has grown significantly, along with the count of students pursuing Italian as their major or minor.
