The Chicana and Chicano Studies program at UNM provides an interdisciplinary approach rooted in Chicano and Latino scholarship. This program aims to foster analytical perspectives on Chicano Hispano Mexicano populations through academic instruction, scholarly investigation, and collaborative community projects. Students can pursue an undergraduate degree, minor, or one of two certificate options while engaging with public events and local partnerships. The curriculum emphasizes three key domains: (1) cultural studies of Chicana/o communities, (2) political systems and equity movements, and (3) cross-border dynamics between the U.S. and Mexico. Course offerings explore diverse themes including gender identity, racial dynamics, artistic expression, social activism, migration patterns, historical narratives, land rights, feminist perspectives, and queer studies. These academic pathways incorporate bilingual instruction (English/Spanish) while maintaining geographic emphasis on New Mexico, the broader Southwest region, and Mexico.

All UNM students can select Chicana and Chicano Studies courses as electives, or they may pursue the minor or certificate options through Arts and Sciences advising. Those enrolled in Liberal Arts or American Studies programs also have the opportunity to concentrate their studies specifically on Chicana and Chicano topics within their degree plans.
