The study of Asian history encompasses three primary regions: China, Japan, and South Asia (India). Although our faculty offers instruction spanning ancient and medieval eras, their scholarly work primarily examines Asia's historical developments from the 1700s through the 1900s.
This department excels in comparative studies of Asian colonialism, gender studies, legal history, contemporary social movements, civil society, and popular culture. Emphasizing worldwide, diasporic, and comparative historical perspectives, our Asian history specialists provide graduate-level courses that complement research on Europe, America, the Middle East, and other global regions. Recent graduate research has investigated subjects like racial dynamics within the British Empire's Asian territories, the relationship between railway expansion and Chinese nationalism, and the intersection of gender and consumer culture in Japan between the world wars.
