The History Graduate Program at UCI provides students with a vibrant intellectual environment characterized by its dedication to interdisciplinary discussions between faculty and students. These conversations focus on key research areas including: Transnational, colonial, and imperial studies; Global History; Science, Technology, Medicine, and Environmental History; Gender and Sexuality Studies; and Religious History. Through graduate seminars, students from diverse geographical and historical backgrounds collaborate to develop a unique scholarly approach that blends theoretical rigor with detailed analysis of primary sources like documents, texts, interviews, and artifacts. The UCI History Department maintains an ideal balance—small enough for personalized attention yet sufficiently robust to foster a dynamic research culture. Students benefit from specialized training in public writing, history education initiatives including the UC Irvine History Project's K-12 outreach, and emerging digital humanities resources. Additionally, the program encourages interdisciplinary exploration through campus-wide emphases in Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. With its intentionally limited enrollment, the graduate program facilitates strong faculty-student partnerships, enabling customized academic paths aligned with each student's aspirations.
