Since the 1890s, when historian Frederick Jackson Turner introduced his groundbreaking Frontier Thesis at the American Historical Association's Chicago meeting during the 1893 Columbian Exposition, American history has formed a cornerstone of our department's academic focus.
Our faculty members specialize in North American history from colonial times to the late 20th century, with particular strengths in environmental studies, Western history, gender and racial issues, slavery, political and cultural developments, education, sports, economic systems, intellectual movements, military history, and the histories of African American, Asian American, and Native American communities.
