The Modern Europe program at Stanford educates students in the comprehensive study of the continent's political, social, cultural, intellectual, diplomatic, and economic history from the late 1700s to today. Over the past ten years, doctoral candidates have explored diverse research topics such as racial identity, political systems, gender studies, population movements, conflict and aid, warfare's societal effects, colonial independence movements, and Cold War dynamics. Graduates from this program have obtained faculty positions at leading universities, received competitive global postdoctoral awards, and found success in non-academic careers. The faculty provides foundational courses, specialized research classes, and personalized reading guidance. All participants engage in numerous workshops and seminars covering both national European histories and Europe's worldwide influence. Typically, doctoral candidates complete their PhD requirements within four to six years, with individual timelines depending on prior academic background and specific language or research demands of their chosen specialization.
