The Johns Hopkins History Department embraces graduate students as part of a vibrant, diverse scholarly community. We view our graduate students as junior colleagues who bring valuable perspectives. Our program is structured for those pursuing a direct path to a PhD, primarily preparing them for academic careers in research and teaching, while also supporting alternative professional paths.
As the nation's first history PhD program, Hopkins has produced graduates who hold prestigious positions at universities across the globe.
Our department remains at the forefront of innovative research, with particular expertise in U.S. history, European history from medieval to modern periods, Latin American, African, Russian, and Chinese studies. Faculty specialties span social, economic, intellectual, and cultural history. Beyond our renowned Atlantic world focus, we foster research clusters in transnational, comparative, urban, imperial, and gender history. We actively seek students with diverse research interests to join our intellectual community.
