To qualify for PhD candidacy in history, applicants must hold a master's degree in history or a related field and successfully complete a qualifying exam. University of Missouri MA graduates: History MA students from this institution may, with their advisory committee's approval, merge their qualifying exam with their master's thesis defense. All other candidates must complete their qualifying exam by the start of their third semester in the University of Missouri's graduate program.
