The History Graduate Program at UCI provides students with a vibrant academic environment characterized by interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty and students. Key research areas include transnational studies, colonial and imperial histories, global historical perspectives, science/technology/medicine/environmental studies, gender/sexuality research, and religious history. Our program facilitates cross-disciplinary discussions through specialized seminars that unite scholars across different historical periods and regions, blending theoretical frameworks with hands-on analysis of archival materials, oral histories, and artifacts. With an intentionally compact structure, our History Department delivers personalized guidance while maintaining a dynamic scholarly network. Unique opportunities include training in public-facing historical writing, pedagogical development through our K-12 outreach initiative (the UC Irvine History Project), and emerging digital humanities resources. Students can further enrich their studies through campus-wide interdisciplinary programs in Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender/Sexuality Studies. The program's intimate scale fosters meaningful faculty mentorship, enabling customized academic pathways aligned with each student's professional aspirations and research interests.
