The University of Utah's Classics program explores every aspect of Greek and Roman civilizations, covering their history, philosophy, theater, scientific heritage, textual analysis, religion, archaeology, and artistic legacy. Beyond comparative genre studies and film analysis, the curriculum incorporates reception studies, Western cultural traditions, and the enduring impact of Greco-Roman mythology, literature, and culture on modern thought and creative works. Classics majors can focus on either ancient Greek or Latin language and literature, beginning with two years of intensive language study that emphasizes phonetics (speech sound systems), morphology (word structure), grammar, and sentence formation in both languages, alongside their literary and poetic traditions. The program culminates in a capstone project where students select a specialized topic to showcase their linguistic proficiency, theoretical understanding, and writing abilities. Program graduates emerge with comprehensive expertise in ancient Greek and Latin languages and their literary canons, equipping them for careers in public or private sectors or advanced academic pursuits.
