Classics explores the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome in their fullest context: encompassing their languages (Greek and Latin), literary works and myths, historical events, philosophical thought, and artistic/archaeological remains. This field connects us to our origins and helps define contemporary identity. Modern concepts like citizenship, migration, democratic systems, social movements, aesthetics, and relationships all trace back to ancient traditions and societal structures.
As an interdisciplinary field, Classics at UCSB offers an engaging, rigorous, and enjoyable academic experience that develops highly transferable skills. The study of ancient languages adds particular depth to humanities education. Alumni pursue diverse careers as archivists, legal professionals, policy advocates, media specialists, educators, performers, and business analysts. Their expertise in linguistic analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication proves valuable across industries including public relations, cultural institutions, corporate environments, and technology sectors.
The Classics program features intimate courses taught by experienced professors, appealing to dedicated scholars. The department provides three specialized tracks (detailed below) to accommodate varied interests. Students pursuing dual degrees often thrive, with Classics being particularly recognized by law and medical school admissions. Our supportive faculty maintains close mentorship with all students.
You are considered a freshman applicant if you have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
English Language Proficiency
The minimum accepted score for admission consideration for the TOEFL is 80 or better on the Internet-based test and 550 or better on the paper-based test.
The minimum accepted score for the IELTS is 6.5 or better band score (academic modules).
