The PhD program in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology aims to train, guide, and support future researchers focused on investigating disease mechanisms caused by microbes, host immune responses to both harmful and benign microorganisms, and disorders stemming from immune system irregularities. Graduates of this program will master fundamental concepts of immune systems across different hosts, microbial disease processes, interactions between hosts and pathogens, microbial and host genetics, and immune-related disease biology. They will develop skills to plan and conduct experiments, employ scientific methodologies, and utilize advanced microbiology and immunology techniques to address pressing health issues.
Microbiology examines microscopic life forms, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Molecular Microbiology specifically investigates crucial molecular components, factors, and functions within microorganisms, with several faculty members actively researching this field. Immunology explores the immune system's elements, disease resistance, immune responses, tolerance mechanisms, and analytical immunological methods. Numerous UTSA faculty study immune system physiology, immune disorder pathologies, and the biochemical and physical properties of immune system components.
