The Graduate Group in Microbiology provides a Doctor of Philosophy program focused on microbiology. This Ph.D. curriculum integrates scholarly education with hands-on training in contemporary molecular techniques for addressing microbiological challenges. While completion times vary by individual, most students finish within approximately five years. The program aims to equip graduates to produce a dissertation that offers novel insights to the field of microbiology. Throughout this journey, the group aims to foster the development of essential skills and foundational knowledge, preparing students to pursue independent research careers in academic, industrial, healthcare, or governmental settings.

The Biotechnology specialization offers a robust interdisciplinary focus, incorporating studies in bioethics along with business and legal dimensions of biotechnology. This includes a 3-6 month practical internship at a biotech firm, research lab in another institution, or national laboratory. Dr. Kjelstrom, the Program Coordinator, supports students in securing internships, crafting compelling application materials, and cultivating professional competencies relevant to corporate environments.
