The Religious Studies graduate program at the University of Texas focuses on examining religious phenomena through cultural and historical lenses. Our approach emphasizes research guided by theoretical frameworks and analytical inquiries, utilizing appropriate methodologies. While student research projects don't necessarily require comparative elements, we acknowledge comparison as fundamental to our field, shaping our theoretical perspectives. All students must demonstrate the ability to compare across traditions, cultures, or regions while mastering relevant theories and developing expertise in their research's specific social and historical contexts. This includes proficiency in necessary languages and competence in at least two methodological approaches. Students are encouraged to utilize the extensive theoretical, historical, and linguistic resources across our department and the wider university.
This specialization prepares students for academic careers by focusing on the religious histories of the Americas. The program supports diverse intellectual interests and research methods. Students undertake interdisciplinary research in either Latin America/Caribbean or North American studies while gaining teaching proficiency in the complementary region. Additionally, they engage with two other historical or theoretical fields, one of which may extend beyond Religious Studies.
