Develop a scriptural interpretation approach that's grounded in history, enriched by theory, politically aware, and contextually meaningful.
Bible and Cultures stands as an innovative doctoral program in biblical scholarship, distinct from all others in North America. It bridges testamentary divides, moving past the conventional separation of Hebrew Bible and New Testament studies that often isolates scholars and limits cross-testamental exchange. The program also transcends cultural boundaries by examining biblical texts not just in their ancient origins but also through their complex interpretive histories and modern-day applications. Moreover, it fosters interdisciplinary connections, consistently engaging biblical scholarship with other theological disciplines and significant theoretical and sociopolitical movements across the humanities and social sciences.
Within this program, investigations into biblical language, its historical and political settings, its varied cultural interpretations, and its portrayals of identity, relationships, social structures, nature, and difference actively incorporate modern frameworks like literary and cultural analysis, postcolonial thought, gender and queer studies, environmental research, race/ethnicity studies, and theological-practical applications.
