This program enables students to focus on Islamic texts, traditions, and scholarly examination across historical periods from the medieval era (6th century) to modern times. While centered on Islamic faith and customs within Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Central Asian contexts, the field also accommodates broader explorations. Those examining Islamic ethics or contemporary Islam in North America can connect with the Religion and Critical Thought specialization, while comparative studies of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism align with the Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean track. The Asian Religious Traditions path offers relevance for Central and South Asian studies. Prospective students must demonstrate proficiency in necessary research languages. Graduate studies may integrate with regional programs (Middle East Studies, South Asian Studies, African Studies) while utilizing resources from History, Comparative Literature, Art History, and Anthropology departments.
