Integrative Biology's 38 faculty members explore biological systems from molecular to ecosystem levels, studying animals, plants, and microorganisms through interdisciplinary approaches. Their research aims to understand life's complexity, with individual projects detailed on faculty profiles. The department operates from two main buildings: Patterson Labs (PAT) and Biological Laboratories (BIO), featuring cutting-edge labs for organismal, molecular, and computational research. Affiliated research centers include the Center for Brain, Behavior, and Evolution.
The department's Biodiversity Center maintains extensive specimen collections for research, featuring a comprehensive plant resource center. Field research opportunities exist at nearby Brackenridge Field Laboratory and Stengl Lost Pines Biological Research Station, both affiliated with UT Austin.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
