The Department of Plant Biology represents just one component of Michigan State University's extensive commitment to plant science. MSU boasts some of the largest and most prestigious plant science research initiatives globally, spanning multiple departments, field stations, research facilities, and graduate programs. Serving as the central hub for MSU's substantial plant science research efforts, the Department of Plant Biology provides an dynamic environment for academic study and scientific investigation. Our program features both Master's and PhD degree pathways, along with options for students to pursue dual degrees or specialized certifications through MSU's interdisciplinary programs like Ecology, Evolution and Behavior (EEB) and Molecular Plant Sciences (MPS). Typically, students complete their Master's degree within two years, while PhD candidates generally finish in five years. With more than 35 faculty members investigating plant biology across all scales - from molecular to ecosystem levels - our department emphasizes fundamental research across all plant biology disciplines. This approach trains students to synthesize knowledge across various biological systems. Our department offers a wide array of research opportunities and a adaptable graduate program, where each student collaborates with their advisory committee to design a customized curriculum aligned with their academic interests and professional goals.
