The Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (ORIE) graduate program within UT Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering is an expanding, nationally acclaimed initiative that cultivates a collaborative environment. Its interdisciplinary faculty and students concentrate on research areas aimed at benefiting society and addressing intricate systems. ORIE professors collaborate across multiple UT Austin departments, offering specialized knowledge in fields like applied mathematics, operations research, decision science, control systems, economics, statistics, computer science, and financial analysis.
Fundamentally, ORIE employs diverse analytical approaches to enhance decision-making processes within complex systems. This field bridges human interactions with both natural and engineered systems across various sectors. Rooted in process-oriented methodologies and data-centric solutions, it ultimately strives to empower individuals with improved decision-making capabilities.
Admission is based on GPA, GRE scores, letters of reference, and a statement of purpose. Generally, admitted students have an MS degree, but we also have a program to allow students to work on a Ph.D. degree directly from their B.S. degree.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
