The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) provides three advanced degree options: a Master of Engineering (MEng), a Master of Science (MS), and a Doctoral (PhD) program. These curricula are designed for professionals with engineering or mathematical science backgrounds seeking to deepen their expertise in quantitative modeling for system design, analysis, risk assessment, and decision-making. These methodologies apply to intricate systems across industrial, service, and public sectors, encompassing energy networks, logistics systems, healthcare delivery, and financial markets. Students can focus on theoretical foundations for academic research or practical implementation of cutting-edge solutions to contemporary challenges.
Earning a PhD necessitates completing an original dissertation on an IEOR-related topic. Potential research directions include exploring mathematical theories and computational approaches for optimization or stochastic modeling, including risk evaluation. Alternatively, scholars may develop innovative frameworks for system architecture, strategic planning, and operational management across diverse fields such as logistics networks, energy infrastructure, healthcare delivery, and financial markets.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
