The Mathematics Department provides a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program, welcoming approximately 15 new students each Fall who embrace the program's challenges, rewards, and collaborative spirit while engaging in advanced mathematical study and groundbreaking research. Additionally, we offer a Master of Arts (MA) specializing in Actuarial Mathematics, admitting around 2 students annually to prepare them for fulfilling careers in actuarial science and statistics. Please note that master's degrees are not available in other mathematical disciplines.
Our graduate community consists of 85-90 students across both Ph.D. and MA programs, forming a close-knit, supportive network that values diversity and inclusion, particularly for groups historically underrepresented in mathematics. Our ambitious, high-achieving student body includes both domestic and international members, currently representing six continents. We maintain that our diversity—spanning gender, race, ethnicity, geographic background, and more—strengthens our entire community. We take pride in our students' accomplishments. University of Texas Mathematics Ph.D. candidates contribute to advancements across diverse fields, from knot theory to fluid dynamics, and from algebraic geometry to financial mathematics. Recent Ph.D. graduates predominantly pursue postdoctoral research, with many securing prestigious positions—some obtaining tenure-track appointments at institutions like MIT, UC Davis, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Oregon. A significant number of alumni enter high-skill positions in finance, technology, data science, and engineering at companies ranging from industry leaders (Google, Netflix, Boeing) to startups, while others choose careers in education or public service.
The Math Department accepts students interested in pursuing a PhD in pure or applied mathematics, and students interested in a Master's degree in actuarial science. All students admitted to the PhD program are offered financial support.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
