The three-year Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program in Music Performance prepares students to become well-rounded performer-scholars. Beyond achieving technical proficiency on their chosen instrument or voice, candidates must show comprehensive knowledge of music theory, teaching methods, historical context, and repertoire within their specialization.
Performance students undergo intensive applied instruction with our renowned faculty artists. The curriculum includes weekly private lessons, coursework in music theory and history, ensemble participation, chamber music collaborations, and public recital requirements. Weekly studio classes foster community by offering solo performance platforms and discussions on orchestral/operatic excerpts, stage fright management, pedagogical approaches, practice techniques, and connecting with audiences. The program also features a vibrant visiting artist series, hosting recent masterclasses with Chicago Symphony's Robert Chen, Grammy-nominated flutist Brandon Patrick George, and Metropolitan Opera regular Rafael Davila, a Butler School graduate.
The UT Symphony Orchestra organizes a yearly Concerto Competition where brass, woodwind, percussion, string, and piano students may earn the opportunity to perform as featured soloists during the orchestra's season.
