The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) represents the highest practical degree in music, tailored for performers and conductors seeking to achieve peak artistic excellence. This program prepares graduates with the academic credentials typically required for collegiate-level music instruction.
Prospective vocal performance students must demonstrate competency in French, German, and Italian languages. Based on faculty evaluation, some candidates may need to complete additional language preparation.
Degree requirements include curated recitals and a culminating written project, developed in collaboration with the student's advisory committee. This committee comprises at least four faculty members: the primary advisor, a specialist from the student's performance area, a music historian or theorist, and a Graduate School representative.
Students must maintain a B average across all coursework. Comprehensive exams in both performance and academic subjects must be successfully completed during or after coursework, preceding a final oral examination. All D.M.A. candidates must demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language, though certain focus areas may substitute alternative research skills with committee approval. Choral conducting students must additionally prove competency in foreign language diction.
The program offers two specializations: Performance and Conducting. Both require 90 post-baccalaureate credits (93 for Choral Conducting). Applicants holding relevant master's degrees may transfer applicable credits, subject to graduate faculty approval regarding both quantity and suitability.
