The Graduate Certificate in Food Safety is a collaborative program between the Department of Public Health (College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, UTK) and the Department of Food Science (Herbert College of Agriculture). This program equips future leaders, researchers, educators, and professionals in public health and the food industry with essential knowledge and practical skills to improve food safety and reduce foodborne illnesses. Supporting partners include the Center for Agriculture and Food Security and Preparedness and the Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Administered through the Tennessee Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence and managed by the Department of Public Health, this certificate enhances foundational concepts from each discipline's Master's degree core curriculum while accommodating students' prior experiences. The 13 required graduate credit hours can also apply toward graduate degree requirements. Additionally, the program provides specialized training for working professionals in public health or food-related fields to enhance their job performance. Participants will engage with contemporary policy research and develop competencies in policy analysis, research methods, program assessment, and advocacy. The entire certificate can be completed online.
