The Arthur Satz Department of Music at the University of Rochester provides a bachelor of arts (BA) in music, a music minor, and diverse technical and non-technical courses. Students may also enroll in Eastman School of Music courses, available to all qualified students meeting prerequisites.
Collaborating with the Eastman School of Music, the Arthur Satz Department offers a BA in music. This program combines academic coursework, private lessons, and ensemble participation to develop musical comprehension, historical context, and compositional techniques while promoting performance excellence. While rigorous, the music major accommodates double majors, pre-law, or pre-medicine paths.
University regulations limit concentration courses to 80 credit hours maximum.
Music department undergraduates frequently conduct research via independent studies, often aligned with their major focus areas. Working closely with faculty advisors, students design and execute research projects, with ongoing faculty consultation encouraged.
Undergraduate music research encompasses scholarly work (analytical and historical studies), creative compositions (including musical theater and chamber pieces), and performance-based projects.
