The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the wider University population, it provides foundational music courses for General Education, ensemble performance experiences, private instruction, and introductory classes in piano, voice, and guitar, along with Music minor options. The Bachelor of Music program equips students for professional music careers, with graduates gaining the ability to: 1) accurately interpret sheet music and recognize performance mistakes, 2) evaluate and pinpoint essential components in musical compositions and renditions, 3) deliver technically proficient performances adhering to stylistic conventions. Admission and graduation standards align with the National Association of Schools of Music guidelines and Tennessee's teacher certification requirements. At the undergraduate level, the division offers two degree paths: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music and a more specialized Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with five focus areas: instrumental performance, vocal performance, composition, instrumental music education, and vocal music education. The B.M. curriculum dedicates about two-thirds of its four-year structure to music studies. Specifically designed for future educators, the B.M. in music education merges core academics with musical training and pedagogical strategies, leading to teaching certification upon completion. All music degrees provide solid groundwork for advanced graduate studies.
