The Music Department's program equips students with an understanding of musical traditions and significant compositions throughout history. Through theoretical studies and skill development, students gain the ability to analyze and value music intellectually. Performance opportunities enhance technical abilities and artistic expression. Rooted in liberal arts principles, all department programs aim to cultivate versatile musicians and well-educated individuals through comprehensive learning.
UAH music degree candidates must fulfill the Music Core requirements along with at least one specialization area. The core curriculum focuses on classical music foundations, requiring all majors to study a principal classical instrument - including voice, piano, organ, classical guitar, or standard orchestral/band instruments. The program incorporates both ensemble and solo performance training. Students in non-education music specializations must also complete general liberal arts education requirements.
