The Master of Science in Historic Preservation merges comprehensive academic study with hands-on professional skills essential for the field. This two-year program spans four consecutive semesters, requiring students to complete four to five courses each term (totaling 19 Course Units). Foundational courses in the first year lay the groundwork for advanced integrative work in the second year, including the Preservation Studio and Thesis. Students select electives within a chosen Concentration, with 10 of the 19 Course Units allocated to these specialized courses. A mandatory summer internship bridges the two academic years. The MSHP degree can also be combined with other Weitzman School departments or Penn schools through established dual-degree pathways.
Applicants must have completion of bachelor’s degree.
A strong command of the English language is necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants whose families do not speak English at home, or applicants who have not attended a high school or secondary school where the primary language of instruction is English, are asked to take the TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, administered by the Educational Testing Service. In the event the TOEFL is not readily accessible, Penn will accept results from the IELTS, the International English Language Testing System.
