Our institution offers both MA and PhD programs spanning diverse historical disciplines such as Global, US, Latin American, and European studies. Each term features an array of specialized courses covering thematic studies, historiographical approaches, and research seminars. Recent course offerings have delved into social/cultural history, labor studies, gender/women's history, public history, and science/technology history. Faculty expansions have enhanced our expertise in Chinese history, Pacific imperial studies, women's history, and scientific history. MA students select a primary focus area from our department's offerings, which include: US history, Latin American studies, European history, Middle Eastern studies, East Asian studies, and History of Science. Faculty advisors are assigned based on the student's chosen specialization. MA candidates have the option to pursue a Graduate Certificate in Public History (open to all master's students university-wide) or a Global History concentration alongside their standard coursework. Detailed information about our graduate history programs can be found in our departmental publication "Graduate Programs in History," available through the History Department office.

Qualification Requirements

The goal of our graduate program is to offer a small, high quality program with a favorable student-faculty ratio and ample opportunity for participation in seminars, lecture courses, and individual instruction. We offer fields leading to the master's degree in both geographically and topically defined areas and fields leading to the doctorate in the history of the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Our graduate program is selective. In recent years, owing to a rise in the number of applicants and a decrease in the size of the program, we have only been able to admit approximately 20 applicants.
Complete applications must include the following: (1) application form, (2) application fee, (3) personal statement, (4) transcripts, (5) at least two letters of recommendation, and (6) writing sample. Massachusetts residents must also submit a residency statement to qualify for in-state tuition. Some U.S. permanent residents and international applicants must submit TOEFL scores.

Writing sample
Applicants to the graduate program should submit a writing sample of up to 30 pages.

Personal Statement
Most Personal Statements run about two pages, single-spaced. The purpose of this element of the application is to enable the admissions committee to assess the degree to which the applicant's intellectual aims and career objectives fit with the interests and strengths of our faculty and program.
We do not have a minimum requirement. GPAs should be over 3.0 to be competitive in admissions decisions, 3.5 and up are most competitive.
