The University of Pennsylvania maintains a distinguished legacy of fostering graduate education in American arts from the 1700s to contemporary times. Multiple faculty members jointly guide and instruct students in this discipline. The History of Art Department provides a Master of Arts program designed to enhance students' understanding of artistic works and the analytical approaches used in art scholarship. After earning their M.A., Penn alumni have secured curator roles at prominent museums, regional institutions, auction firms, and art galleries. Many graduates have also leveraged their M.A. as a foundation for doctoral studies, gaining entry into elite Ph.D. programs across the United States and internationally. Faculty members provide dedicated mentorship to M.A. candidates, helping them realize their academic objectives and equipping them for their chosen professional trajectories.

Qualification Requirements

The committee reviews each application very carefully and weighs all aspects of a candidate's preparation for graduate study. The primary elements of the application include: academic transcript, (3) letters of recommendations, TOEFL scores for international students, personal statement (1000 word maximum), and writing sample (30 double-spaced pages maximum, including images). All offer insights into a student's past achievements and prospects for future development. It is normally expected that students have a solid background in art history, but it is not necessary to have majored in art history. In addition, applicants should demonstrate good proficiency in at least one foreign language. Two foreign languages will be required of all Ph.D and MA students before they advance to candidacy. GRE Test are no longer required for admissions.
