The study of art history explores humanity's intellectual and cultural creations through the examination of artifacts, artistic works, and architectural monuments worldwide. The Master of Arts in Art History equips students for advanced doctoral research in art history and similar disciplines. Graduates with an M.A. will qualify for diverse roles in museums and cultural institutions, as well as teaching positions that don't demand a terminal degree. This art history M.A. program mandates at least 30 credit hours of postgraduate study, encompassing two essential theory and methodology courses (ARTH 5308 and ARTH 5309), 12 credits in graduate-level art history, 6 thesis credits (ARTH 6000), and 6 credits of supplementary coursework (the minor). Furthermore, proficiency in at least one foreign language is required. Working closely with faculty advisors, students will design comprehensive curricula spanning these specializations: modern art and critical theory, European art from medieval to contemporary periods with focus regions including the Mediterranean, Italy, France, and northern Europe, American art, and current artistic practices. The program additionally features a cross-regional specialization: art of border regions and cultural exchange zones.
