To specialize in art history, students must complete at least 33 credits in art history courses, including 6 thesis credits. They also need to take 3 approved credits from outside the Art Department, authorized by both the department head and their major advisor. Foreign language reading proficiency is mandatory and should be obtained before starting thesis work that requires it. The major advisor will coordinate a proficiency exam. Applicants to the MA program with an art history focus must hold an accredited BA or BS degree (or equivalent) with a minimum of 18 credits in art history, museum studies, visual studies, or similar fields. Any undergraduate course deficiencies must be addressed before achieving candidacy status.

Qualification Requirements

A student seeking admission to graduate school at NMSU must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution. The academic program of the completed degree should be equivalent to a comparable NMSU degree's requirements.
Students must send official transcripts from their prior colleges or universities directly to the Graduate School.
An international applicant whose grade-point average (or its equivalent) is greater than or equal to 3.0., from a four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent.
