The University of Pennsylvania's Historical Musicology graduate program caters to students aiming to undertake innovative research, create exceptional scholarly work, and hone teaching abilities for academic roles in musicology, while also supporting those exploring non-academic career paths in music and other fields. Our program's core mission remains exposing students to diverse historical perspectives and humanistic research methods. We achieve this through: Stimulating graduate research with seminars covering an evolving array of subjects. Faculty expertise spans medieval sacred and secular music connections, Renaissance/Baroque vocal works, opera scholarship, digital humanities in music, critical race analysis, jazz traditions, Western black music traditions, Chopin's cultural contexts, modernist landscapes, colonial musical encounters, feminist music scholarship, transatlantic music research, and musical book history studies.
