The University of Oregon stands among just four West Coast institutions providing a doctoral program in music theory. This unique program equips students for dual careers as professional theorists and music theory educators.
Over the past two decades, graduates from this doctoral program have achieved remarkable career placements. They've gained national recognition for their outstanding presentations at conferences across the country.
The Ph.D. curriculum balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, offering comprehensive exposure to the discipline. Coursework encompasses specialized analytical methods (including Schenkerian, post-tonal and Neo-Riemannian approaches), tonal music structures, popular music analysis, theoretical history, global music traditions, teaching methodologies, composition, and electronic music, among other areas.
Students benefit from close faculty mentorship, with many gaining instructional experience through our Graduate Employee initiative. A particularly strong bond develops between candidates and their primary advisors, as well as with their dissertation committees. The program concludes with a public defense of the student's original research and submission of a doctoral dissertation.
