During the initial three years of graduate studies in musicology, students focus on finishing mandatory courses and passing both qualifying and specialized area exams. Once they successfully defend their dissertation proposal (which is part of the special area exam), their attention shifts to conducting research and composing their dissertation. This final project showcases the student's capacity for methodical, independent work that results in a significant scholarly contribution. The Music Department integrates musical performance with academic exploration across various disciplines including composition, conducting, performance, music history, ethnomusicology, music theory, cognitive science, intermedia, and digital technologies.
