The Doctor of Musical Arts program at the Bienen School of Music cultivates both artistic excellence and academic accomplishment. During the intensive two-year residency, students dedicate themselves to continuous study of their instrument or composition while completing a demanding curriculum that strengthens their knowledge in complementary academic fields. To prepare for professional opportunities, doctoral candidates usually gain teaching experience through structured programs or customized internships. A minimum of 18 course units is required for all degree tracks. Northwestern's Music Theory and Cognition Program stands out by uniting two interconnected fields with a shared objective: exploring how musical form connects with creative expression (composition, improvisation), performance (interpretation, movement), and audience engagement (listening and analysis).
Our research centers on the listener as a unifying theme, embracing diverse interpretations and applications—from historical audiences shaped by stylistic traditions to modern listeners navigating digital media and worldwide sound environments. We view the relationship between music theory and cognition as dynamic, adaptable to various approaches and methodologies. This encompasses music theory enriched by cultural-historical insights into listening contexts and cognitive science findings, alongside empirical investigations employing techniques like corpus analysis, laboratory experiments, and ethnographic research.
