American Sign Language (ASL) serves as the primary communication method for deaf individuals across the U.S. and certain Canadian regions. This intricate visual language naturally evolved, utilizing hand gestures and facial cues to convey meaning. Similar to global sign languages, ASL employs three-dimensional spatial elements for linguistic expression. The distinctive characteristics of signed languages and their organic growth within deaf populations offer valuable understanding about humanity's innate capacity for language acquisition and evolution. These insights inform academic studies and research programs in ASL and Deaf Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
