The Linguistics PhD program prepares students for research-oriented careers by providing comprehensive training in core areas including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics (refer to faculty listings and individual profiles below). After mastering these fundamentals, students progress to specialized coursework and original research, culminating in two qualifying papers and a dissertation. Proficiency in a foreign language is mandatory.
While not compulsory, all doctoral candidates have the chance to gain teaching experience by assisting with undergraduate courses, an opportunity we highly recommend.
Note that our department doesn't provide instruction in applied linguistics. For these offerings at NYU, prospective students should reach out to the TESOL Program within NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
