The Department of Linguistics and TESOL at UT Arlington offers academic programs in linguistics and TESOL studies. Our curriculum aims to enhance language comprehension by investigating its structure, usage, and cognitive processing. This objective is pursued through rigorous study in core linguistic disciplines including phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and psycholinguistics, along with their interdisciplinary connections. Students gain proficiency in diverse research methodologies such as field studies, corpus analysis, and experimental techniques to examine data from various global languages, encompassing both native and non-native speakers. Our Linguistics degrees (PhD, MA, BA) center on this scientific approach to language study. The graduate programs particularly suit individuals with prior experience in foreign languages or English linguistics, though students from anthropology, psychology, computer science, philosophy, or religious studies backgrounds may also find them valuable. We welcome applications from candidates without formal linguistics education, provided they're willing to complete necessary preparatory coursework.
For Ph.D. program applicants, GPA is based on all graduate work completed and recorded at the time the applicant submits an application for admission.
For BA-to-PhD applicants, GPA is on the undergraduate GPA as determined by the UT Arlington Graduate School.
Applicants are expected to submit a score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, a score of at least 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS, or a minimum TOEFL iBT total score of 79. Further, when the TOEFL iBT is taken, sectional scores of at least 22 on the writing section, 21 on the speaking section, 20 on the reading section, and 16 on the listening section are preferred.
