The Department of Geography provides advanced degree programs culminating in either a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Our graduate studies focus on three key areas: Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Geographic Information Science. With our compact faculty size, students typically pursue customized programs incorporating coursework from related fields. While we expect foundational geography knowledge, we encourage applicants from diverse academic backgrounds who can leverage their prior education to address geographical challenges.
Graduate students should regularly review the Geography Graduate Student Handbook. This resource outlines curriculum expectations, progress review procedures, comprehensive examination details, academic progress standards, available support services, and additional essential information. Make sure to thoroughly understand its contents and refer to it for any program-related inquiries.
The master's degree typically requires two years of full-time enrollment. Full-time status requires registration for a minimum of nine credits each term, with most students taking twelve credits (three four-credit courses) per semester.
