The Master of Arts in geography program examines how human choices impact the environment, how environmental shifts affect society, and the geographic information systems that facilitate this research. The curriculum emphasizes theoretical frameworks, analytical techniques, and computational models across environmental, social, and geospatial sciences. Key research areas include environmental equity, ecosystem modeling, geospatial technologies, land-use impacts, sustainable development, urban ecosystems, climate science, risk assessment, global development, political-environmental interactions, and medical geography.
Most MA candidates enroll in the thesis program, which involves original research and readies graduates for doctoral studies or professional roles in consulting and public service. The non-thesis professional option serves as a final degree, requiring prospective students to consult with the graduate studies director prior to enrollment.
A bachelor's degree with a major in geography is not required, but applicants must have an undergraduate background relevant to the field. Strength in social science, environmental science, or geographic information science and interest in exploring the spatial perspectives that characterize modern geography are important in admission decisions. Depending on their prior training, graduate students may be required to take courses that are prerequisites for course work in their chosen area of graduate study; credit earned in prerequisites does not count toward the graduate degree.
