The Department of Geography provides advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. Students receive research-intensive education designed to foster a multidisciplinary perspective on global issues. This curriculum equips graduates for professional paths in scientific and technological fields, public service, academia, commerce, as well as both theoretical and practical geographical applications, including innovative research endeavors. Doctoral candidates have the opportunity to pursue supplementary interdisciplinary specializations in areas such as Cognitive Science, Environment and Society, Global Studies, Quantitative Social Science Methods, Technology and Society, Population Studies, and Climate Science. Geography graduate scholars engage with prominent UCSB research institutions, including the Spatial Studies Center, Earth Research Institute, Climate Hazards Center, Broom Demographic Center, Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute, and the Ecological Analysis and Synthesis National Center.
An undergraduate degree in geography is not required, and many of our students do not have prior degrees in geography. Applicants with strong academic backgrounds in any related field of study are encouraged to apply. The department requires an undergraduate grade-point average of 3.25 or higher
TOEFL scores 550 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 80 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Overall Band score of 7 or higher (if applicable).
Applications are accepted for Fall only; the application deadline is December 15.
