The University of Minnesota's geography graduate program showcases the field's diverse scope through expertise in human geography, physical geography, nature-society interactions, and geographic information science. Both faculty and students actively teach and conduct research within and between these domains, as demonstrated by key research focuses: cultural dynamics and spatial flows, environmental transformations, digital society geographies, geovisualization techniques, global inequalities and development, governance and social equity, urban and global connections, and human-environment relations. The program emphasizes personalized learning with minimal mandatory coursework, allowing students to collaborate with advisors in crafting tailored academic paths aligned with their career aspirations.
Anyone who has or will obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside the U.S. may apply for graduate admission.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.50.
Undergraduate degrees need not be from a program in geography. However, students whose previous work is not in geography may be asked to complete specific courses that do not provide graduate credit.
