The Geography and Environment Department's graduate program equips exceptional students for prestigious research and teaching roles in academia and professional settings. Those who earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree gain specialized knowledge in an advanced subject while building a comprehensive understanding of geographic history, theory, and methodologies. Typically completed within two years, the master's program involves multiple semesters of coursework followed by a thesis project. This thesis showcases independent research, often incorporating field studies, archival work, or laboratory investigations. Numerous M.A. graduates advance to doctoral studies, while others secure positions in consulting, corporate sectors, education, or government agencies aligned with their specialized training.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
