The English PhD curriculum immerses students in diverse academic disciplines and theoretical perspectives during their first two years, followed by concentrated specialization in years three to five. Following completion of core distribution requirements, candidates collaborate with their faculty advisor - an expert in their chosen field - to develop a personalized Program of Study. Admission to this selective program is highly competitive, with limited available positions.
The University of Oregon's English graduate program encompasses both conventional literary analysis and innovative approaches, offering studies in critical theory, ethnic literature, gender studies, cultural analysis, rhetoric and composition, postcolonial scholarship, environmental criticism, folklore, screen studies, and contemporary media culture.
